Root Canal Therapy in Rocky River, OH

Rocky River Root Canal | Linda Rak Canepa DDSMost people who need a root canal come to us in pain. While the procedure often takes the blame for the pain, it is actually the condition that causes the discomfort, not the root canal therapy itself. Dr. Linda Canepa will help to relieve your anxiety about root canals and relieve your symptoms with effective and gentle treatment.

Why Do I Need a Root Canal?

You might need a root canal for a number of reasons. Sometimes your tooth is infected and causing pain, inflammation, and sensitivity. Other times, it might be due to trauma or an accident. If decay is left untreated and it reaches the nerve and pulp, a root canal may become necessary. Often, we never learn what causes a tooth to flare up, but root canal therapy can alleviate your symptoms and prevent tooth loss.

Common symptoms of teeth requiring root canal therapy include:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Sensitivity to temperature
  • Pain with pressure
  • Facial pain or swelling
  • A bad taste
  • A pimple on your gums
  • Discoloration

How Root Canals Work

Dr. Canepa is extremely gentle and works with patients at their own pace to ensure their comfort during every procedure. Because we use reliable numbing techniques, your root canal should feel no different from a common filling. We strive to make our patients’ experience the best possible and to most people, that means comfortable!

Your enamel is a hard shell that protects your tooth. Deep inside your tooth is a pulp chamber that surrounds the nerve. A root canal eliminates the infection and removes any damaged tissue along with the nerve to relieve your symptoms. Dr. Canepa may place additional medication in the canal prior to filling it and sealing your tooth.

Root Canal Aftercare

Once you have your treatment, your body’s natural immune system will take over and continue the healing process. You may feel sensitivity for a few days, but it will improve until you feel completely healthy again.

Dr. Canepa will advise you regarding post treatment pain management or medications and she may also recommend a restoration, such as a crown or permanent filling, to protect your tooth. After root canal treatment, your tooth may become brittle, and a crown can help prevent damage to your tooth caused by chewing. Whether you need a filling or crown will depend upon the location of your tooth as well as your occlusion (bite). When properly restored, root canals can extend the life of your tooth by decades.
