Your Child's First Visit

When Should Your Child Visit the Dentist?

As a parent of a young child, you may be wondering when your child should see the dentist for the first time. Children develop many habits, including dental habits, at a very young age, so it’s important to instill great oral hygiene habits young- even if they don’t yet have adult teeth. Typically, you want your child’s first dentist visit to be around six months after their first teeth grow in, and no later than three years old. Visiting the dentist at a young age helps to instill the importance of oral hygiene, and it’s never too soon to start professional preventative dental care. Linda Rak Canepa DDS Family Dentistry proudly offers dental services for the whole family, including young children!

Benefits of Early Dental Visits

Many families don’t take their children for dentist visits until they are older, but working with professionals at a young age brings many benefits! Here’s some reasons we recommend taking your child to a dentist at a young age:

  • Address problems early: Habits like thumb sucking can cause teeth to shift at a young age, and this can potentially cause speech impediments and other issues. Along with catching shifting issues early, it’s always beneficial to see a dentist and work towards preventing cavities and gum disease at an early age.
  • Develop healthy habits: Teaching your children not only great at-home oral health habits, but also the importance of regular dentist visits will instill excellent habits. As with all habits that children develop, these moments will define how seriously they take oral health as they grow.
  • Less dentist anxiety: It’s common for adults to have fears and anxiety about visiting the dentist. By starting dental visits early, your child can become more comfortable in dental office, and with dental procedures in general. Family dentists often try to make these visits fun, which helps with this process from a young age.

If you have specific concerns about your child visiting a dentist, look for an experienced team that work with your family from childhood all the way into adulthood. It’s always great to visit a dentist at an early age, and finding an office that you feel comfortable with should be your number one priority!
